Hot weather dangers for children

The Child Death Overview Panel has sadly become aware of an increase in injuries to children caused from falling out of open windows.

In the current heat wave please be vigilant when visiting families and remind people of the dangers, particularly for toddlers, of climbing on to window sills or playing near them. It is important that safety catches are used/ fitted on windows that are left open.

Obviously risks from sun burn and dehydration continue to be areas that everyone needs to be aware of. Public Health also raise the fact that babies and children in car seats and pushchairs can be particularly at risk in hot weather. A vigilant eye needs to be kept for any breathing difficulties and ensuring they are not overheating and/or in direct sun.
