From Harm to Healing: Improving Responses to Young Victims of Crime

Children across the Thames Valley who are already traumatised by being a victim of crime or abuse, are experiencing years of their young lives in limbo whilst awaiting the outcome of the criminal justice process – faced with postponements, last minute delays and lack of communication, and at times facing re-victimisation from peers and agencies. Meanwhile peer-on-peer abuse is on the rise, and support for the child victims, as well as the children who harm, is both limited and at risk.

Through a diverse range of speakers, panels and workshops our aim is to promote discussion around positive ways forward and champion best practice for professionals across education, social care, VCSE and the criminal justice sector.

Confirmed speakers and facilitators include:

  • ACC Katy Barrow Grint, Thames Valley Police
  • Dr Ruth Weir, City University of London
  • SafeLives
  • Dr Carmen Chan, CAMHS Horizon
  • Claire Nicholls, Crown Prosecution Service
  • The Sundial Centre
  • Sylwia Kieran, City University
  • Pete Wallis, Oxfordshire Youth Justice & Exploitation Service
  • Dr Matthew Lister, Oxford Health Forensic CAMHS
  • The SAFE! team

With a focus on the following:

  • Young victims’ experiences of the criminal justice system
  • Teenage relationship abuse, gaps in evidence and legislation
  • Responding to disclosures of sexual harm in school
  • Addressing the evidence gap around young people’s use of harmful behaviours in their relationships
  • Working with harmful sexual behaviour between siblings – update of recommended practise
  • The power of restorative justice with young people
  • Online imagery and Honour Based Abuse
  • Best practice in supporting children following disclosures of sexual harm
  • Support for parents and carers when their child has been victimised
