Core Safeguarding Courses

The OSCB deliver 3 core safeguarding courses;

  • Designated Lead (Intercollegiate Level 3), for those with leadership or management responsibilities for safeguarding children and young people within their role, and/or the named or designated lead professional for their organisation or setting. This course is valid for up to 2 years.

Core Courses for Early Years, Childminders and Play Workers

OSCB run separate Core Courses for Early Years/Childminders/Play Workers. These courses have specific information included for Childminders and those working in an early year’s setting and specify that they are for early years, childminders and childcare settings on the online booking system.

Good Practice Guidance for early years setting regarding expectations of safeguarding training:

The Oxfordshire Safeguarding Children Board (OSCB) recommends good practice guidance that all workers in an early years setting in Oxfordshire who have contact with children for 3 hours or more a month should undertake the OSCB’s Level 2 face to face ‘Generalist Safeguarding’ course. This course covers definitions of categories of abuse and signs to be aware of that a child may be at risk, explores the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and local protocols, procedures and contact details of how to report concerns regarding abuse in Oxfordshire.

The OSCB Training programme is delivered by local professionals, working in the Oxfordshire safeguarding partnership. They bring experience and knowledge to the training and can answer questions about local processes and practice. The course content is bespoke to Oxfordshire; it outlines how the safeguarding system works locally and highlights learning themes from case reviews in the county.

The OSCB would endorse those Early Years Settings whose staff have completed the face to face ‘Generalist Safeguarding’ course provided by the OSCB.

All Designated Safeguarding Lead workers must attend an OSCB Level 3 face to face ‘Designated Safeguarding Lead’ course for multi-agency workers as defined in the EYFS 2017.

Guidance for Childminders

Childminders who are new to the role should attend the ‘Generalist Safeguarding Course’ for Early Years initially.

Once the ‘Generalist Course’ has been completed, they are also required to attend the ‘Designated Safeguarding Lead Course’ for Early Years. Childminders are then required to renew this DSL training every two years but they are not required to renew the Generalist course as well.

Assistant Childminders are only required to attend the Generalist Course, as long as the Lead Childminder is always in attendance in the workplace.

Guidance for governors regarding expectations of safeguarding training

The Oxfordshire Safeguarding Children Board (OSCB) recommends good practice guidance that all school governors should complete the OSCB’s ‘Introduction to Safeguarding’ eLearning course.

The content of this course is bespoke to Oxfordshire; it highlights local procedures for identifying and reporting abuse in the county and gives clear messages about the importance of escalation of concerns as highlighted in national and local case reviews.

The Lead Governor for safeguarding in the school should attend the OSCB’s Level 3 ‘Designated Safeguarding Lead’ webinar (online) or face to face course.

Guidance for management committee members in Early Years settings regarding expectations of safeguarding training

The Oxfordshire Safeguarding Children Board (OSCB) recommends good practice guidance that all committee members in an Early Years provision should complete the OSCB’s ‘Introduction to Safeguarding’ eLearning course.

The content of this course is bespoke to Oxfordshire; it highlights local procedures for identifying and reporting abuse in the county and gives clear messages about the importance of escalation of concerns as highlighted in national and local case reviews.

The Lead Committee Member for safeguarding in the setting should attend the OSCB’s Level 3 ‘Designated Safeguarding Lead’ face to face course.

Early Help Training

  • Recognise when an Early Help Assessment is required and be familiar with completing this process
  • Understand how to implement a Team around the Family and the benefits of doing so with the family and other professionals
  • Ensure the Childs voice is at the centre
  • Understand the role of the Lead Professional

All organisations in England that work with or provide services for children and families have a duty to protect their welfare. Staff and volunteers must be recruited following ‘safer recruitment’ procedures, to ensure, as far as possible, that they are suitable to work with children. Ofsted inspectors look for evidence of this.
